Gertrude Kohnen née Davids nous a quittée le 31 juillet 2022 à la maison entourée de sa famille à l’âge de 86 ans.
Gertrude Davids, épouse de feu Henri Kohnen, laisse dans le deuil ses enfants : Henri jr. (Anne Deblonde), William (Judith Conibear), Martin (Colleen Crooks), Stefan (Karen Murphy), Ursula (Bernard Wennink), Charles, Richard (Ilona Kocsis), Bernard (Shana Pope), ses petits-enfants; Jenny, Valérie, Patrick, Nicole, Henrick, Éric, Andrew, Sophia, Timothy, Rebecca, Emily, Johan, Trinity et Christian. Elle laisse également dans le deuil son beau-frère et belle-sœur en Ontario, Gerhard et Katharina Kohnen ainsi que ses neveux, John, Karl, George et Andrew, leurs conjoints et enfants. Lui survivent sa famille en Allemagne dont une sœur, Franziska Blum et ses deux frères, Bernard et Karl-Heinz Davids, son beau-frère Willy Kohnen et ses belles-sœurs Anna et Kate Kohnen ainsi que nombreux neveux, nièces, parents et amis.
Née le 9 février 1936 en Allemagne près de Düsseldorf, elle a grandi sur la ferme familiale où son père était éleveur de chevaux Belges et par la suite, éleveur de vaches Holstein. Déjà adolescente, elle a cherché à s’émanciper en s’inscrivant elle-même à un programme de formation agricole. Cela a été son premier geste pour acquérir de la liberté et de l’instruction qui se sont poursuivies et ont marqué toute sa vie et a laissé une empreinte précieuse auprès de ses enfants et petits-enfants. Elle s’est mariée en 1958 avec Henri Kohnen, et ils se sont établis sur une ferme familiale pour y fonder leur famille. Ils auront cinq enfants avant d’immigrer au Canada en 1965. Ils prennent alors possession d’une ferme laitière à Mont St-Grégoire-le-Grand où la famille s’agrandira encore avec trois enfants. En 1978, la famille s’installe à St-Simon-de-Bagot, près de St-Hyacinthe, sur une autre ferme laitière et ce pour plus de 30 ans.
Gertrude Kohnen a toujours été une femme d’un grand courage et une force de la nature qui a milité, à sa manière, pour défendre des principes d’égalité hommes-femmes et de justices sociales. Son optimisme infatigable et sa capacité de toujours voir la beauté de la vie même dans l’adversité est un grand héritage qu’elle laisse à sa famille. Sa passion, en plus de sa famille, était les fleurs. Chacun qui a croisé son chemin peut se rappeler de son accueil si chaleureux et de ses magnifiques jardins fleuris et arrangements paysagés qu’elle a créé sur tous les lieux qu’elle a habité. A sa retraite, elle a vécu très heureuse dans la belle communauté de Racine en Estrie pendant dix ans et a passé ses quatre dernières années à Mont-St-Hilaire entourée de sa famille.
Gertrude et Henri Kohnen étaient inséparables et furent mariés pendant 63 ans. Tous les deux ont été entièrement dévoués à leur famille qui lui sont profondément reconnaissants.
La famille souhaite remercier tous les gens des services de santé qui ont soutenu notre mère ces derniers temps, tout particulièrement le personnel du CLSC des Patriotes à Beloeil et la coop Aide-a-Tout. Gertrude Davids, wife of the late Henri Kohnen, is survived by her children: Henri jr. (Anne Deblonde) , William (Judith Conibear), Martin (Colleen Crooks), Stefan (Karen Murphy), Ursula (Bernard Wennink), Charles, Richard (Ilona Kocsis), Bernard (Shana Pope), his grandchildren; Jenny, Valérie, Patrick, Nicole, Henrick, Éric, Andrew, Sophia, Timothy, Rebecca, Emily, Johan, Trinity and Christian. She also leaves behind her brother-in-law and sister-in-law in Ontario, Gerhard and Katharina Kohnen, and her nephews, John, Karl, George and Andrew, their spouse, and children. She leaves behind her family in Germany, which includes her sister, Franziska Blum and her husband Herbert, her two brothers, Bernard and Karl-Heinz Davids and his wife Hildegard, her brother-in-law Willy Kohnen and her sisters-in-law, Anna and Kate Kohnen as well as many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Born on February 9th, 1936 in Germany near Düsseldorf, she grew up on the family farm where her father was a Belgian horse breeder and later a Holstein cow breeder. Already a teenager, she sought to emancipate herself by enrolling in an agricultural training program. This was her first act in gaining freedom and education that continued and marked her entire life and left a precious imprint on her children and grandchildren. She married Henri Kohnen in 1958 and they settled on a family farm to start their family. They had five children before immigrating to Canada in 1965. They then took possession of a dairy farm in Mont St-Grégoire-le-Grand where the family would grow again with three children. In 1978, the family moved to St-Simon-de-Bagot, near St-Hyacinthe, on another dairy farm where they lived for more than 30 years.
Gertrude Kohnen has always been a woman of great courage and a force of nature who campaigned, in her own way, to defend the principles of gender equality and social justice. Her tireless optimism and her ability to always see the beauty of life even in the face of adversity is a great legacy she leaves to her family. Her passion, in addition to her family, was flowers. Everyone who has crossed her path can remember her warm welcome and the beautiful flower gardens and landscaped arrangements she has created in all the places she has lived. When she retired, she lived very happily in the beautiful community of Racine in the Eastern Townships for ten years and spent her last four years in Mont-St-Hilaire surrounded by her family.
Gertrude and Henri Kohnen were inseparable and were married for 63 years. Both have been completely devoted to their families who are deeply grateful to them.
