On December 17, 2017, the world lost a gem whose 95 years on this earth had been a blessing for all who knew her. Shirley (McKelvey) Bernier was the adored mother of Keith (deceased), Linda, Allen (deceased), and Wendy. Her death is also mourned as the beloved mother-in-law of Angela, cherished grandmother of Shawna (Kramer), Stephanie (Alan), Edward (Joann), and Raymond, great grand-mother of Lina, and by our “American clan” of relatives. As Shirley passes from this life to the next, she joins her husbands (Keith Corey; Alphonse Bernier), her sons (Keith and Allen), son-in-laws (Gary Jude and Gregory Rozee), and countless friends and other relatives.

Shirley’s greatest passion was people. She was accepting of all, and those she named as friends spanned all walks of life, and many generations, cultures and nationalities. Kind and generous, to a fault, people were drawn to her as a natural confidante, and she leaves a legacy of having deeply touched the lives of many. We would ask that those of you who have particular memories, stories, or thoughts of Shirley you would like to share to forward those for us to create an anthology to honor mom – to the attention of Wendy Bernier (via mail, email, Facebook, etc)

Proudly born and raised in the Eastern Townships, Shirley spent the bulk of her adult life living alternately on the South Shore (McMasterville, Otterburn Park) and in Montreal (Ridgewood Ave, Manoir Westmount, and Residence St. Margaret). Orphaned as a child, and widowed twice by the time she was 34, her life had its share of challenges, but she developed a strong faith, and lived her life from a lens of incurable optimism.

Shirley was a teacher at heart all her life, and taught elementary school both in her younger years, and again as she neared retirement age. She ran a private kindergarten in her home for a number of years in the 50’s. For many years after retirement, she offered private English lessons to language learners of all ages. She always took pride in her hair and nails, and worked for many years when her children were growing, as a cosmetician. Although what she savoured most was time spent with friends and family, other passions over the years included: doing handwriting analysis, fine dining, square dancing, bingo, and playing card games.

Shirley’s life will be celebrated in the spring on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at St Bruno United Church (25 Lakeview, Saint Bruno). Condolences will be received at 10:00, with a celebration of life ceremony at 11:00.
